 지난 3일 방송된 KBS2 ‘셀럽병사의 비밀’에서는 죽음조차 갈라놓지 못한 구준엽의 절절한 순애보가 공개되어 시청자들의 눈시울을 붉혔다.

 방송을 통해 공개된 구준엽의 근황은 1년 전 아내를 떠나보낸 직후의 슬픔에서 벗어나지 못한 모습이었다. 그는 여전히 대만에 머물며 매일 왕복 3시간 거리의 묘소를 찾고 있었다. 비가 쏟아지는 궂은 날씨에도 “비가 와서 안 나오실 줄 알았다”는 제작진의 말에 그는 “와야죠. 희원이는 저보다 힘들게 여기 누워 있는데”라고 담담히 답했다.

 구준엽의 순애보는 두 사람의 기적 같은 재회 과정에서도 증명된 바 있다. 20년 전 소속사의 반대로 원치 않는 이별을 해야 했던 그는 서희원의 이혼 소식을 듣자마자 20년간 간직했던 번호로 전화를 걸어 재회에 성공했다. 코로나19로 국경이 막혔을 때도 “가족이 되면 만날 수 있다”며 혼인신고를 먼저 하고 대만으로 날아갔을 정도로 한국과 대만 모두를 감동시킨 ‘세기의 러브스토리’를 쓴 구준엽이다.

 결혼 후에도 그의 헌신은 계속되었다. 서희원의 건강이 좋지 않자 구준엽은 지극정성으로 간호하며 곁을 지켰다. 처제 서희제는 “형부를 만난 뒤 언니가 다시 아이처럼 웃기 시작했다”고 증언했다. 구준엽은 아내를 지키기 위해 대만에서 ‘국민 사위’로 불리며 쉴 새 없이 일했고, 가족의 보금자리를 가꾸는 데 온 힘을 쏟았다.

 그러나 2025년 2월, 일본 여행 중 급격한 건강 악화로 서희원이 세상을 떠나면서 행복은 3년 만에 막을 내렸다. 갑작스러운 비극 앞에서도 구준엽은 무너지는 대신 침묵으로 아내를 지켰다. 전 남편 측의 가짜 뉴스와 루머가 쏟아질 때도 그는 대응하지 않고, 오직 아내가 편안히 쉴 수 있기만을 바랐다.

 서희원이 떠난 지 1년, 구준엽은 많이 야위었지만 그의 사랑은 더욱 단단해져 있었다. 제작진 앞에서 끝내 말을 잇지 못하고 눈물만 흘리던 구준엽은 “희원이가 사람들에게 잊히지 않았으면 좋겠다”는 마지막 바람을 전했다. /elnino8919@osen.co.kr
