 '식객 허영만의 백반기행' 정재환이 무명시절 생활고를 고백했다. 31일 방송된 TV조선 '식객 허영만의 백반기행'에서는 당대 최고의 인기를 자랑했던 MC 정재환과 함께 다채로운 세종시를 찾았다. MC 정재환은 1980, 90년대 수려한 외모와 깔끔한 말솜씨로 간판급 프로그램 '청춘행진곡'의 진행을 맡았다. 심형래, 임하룡, 주병진과 함께 당대 국민 MC로 불리던 그는 40살에 과감히 학업을 선택하며 돌연 자취를 감췄다.

 MC부터 개그맨, 교수까지 섭렵하며 우리말 지킴이로 거듭난 정재환은 "성균관대에서 10년 정도 한국사 강의를 하고 있다"고 근황을 밝혔다. 우리말과 역사를 섭렵한 정재환은 19살에 이수만이 진행하던 '별이 빛나는 밤에'를 통해 개그맨으로 일찍 데뷔 후, '청춘행진곡'에서 진행 솜씨를 인정받으며 제2의 전성기를 누렸다. 정재환은 방송에서 돌연 자취를 감춘 이유를 밝혔다. 그는 "TV 방송을 하다 보니 내가 우리말을 잘 모르는구나 싶었다"면서 "마흔살 넘어서 성균관대 입학 후 공부하면서 우리말이 소중하고 대단하다는 걸 느꼈다. 그러면서 방송에서 멀어지게 됐다"고 전했다.

 데뷔는 빨랐지만 무명생활을 오래 한 정재환은 "이문세가 진행하던 '별이 빛나는 밤에'에 주 1회 고정 게스트로 출연했는데, 회당 출연료는 1만 8천원이었다. 월 7만 2천원 가지고 살았는데, 돈을 안 썼다. 쓸 돈이 없었다"고 토로했다. 정재환은 집에 쌀과 연탄이 부족한 생활고를 겪으며 경제적 어려움에 부딪혔다. 이후 승승장구하게 된 그는 "제일 많이 받은 출연료는 회당 250만원인데, 한편으로는 돈을 많이 못 벌었다. 배철수 선배가 '인기 있을 때 자기 관리해야 한다. 프로그램 남발하지 말라'고 했다. 그래서 돈을 많이 못 멀었다"고 밝혀 안타까움을 자아냈다. 김은정 텐아시아 기자 eun@tenasia.co.kr
